CHAPTER 5

There was a morning ritual at Ella’s and Mark’s house that the couple was used to. Every morning, before going to work, they would sit in the dining room, play music on the TV in the living room and eat breakfast together. There had been days when they would remain silent, and on other days they would talk about work, neighbors, or friends like all normal married couples do. But they had never missed a day.

They were both surprised by their spouse’s inclination not to break that routine. Even though Mark had spent the night alone in the living room again, he had set the table for two. Ella was dressed for work and heading for the dining room as if hoping they would have breakfast together. The music was on and coffee was already on the table. She sat across from her husband in absolute silence. Mark scanned her face for clues of her mood, but could not detect anything.

“So, what now?” she asked without looking at him.

“Do you love him?”

“Of course I don’t,” she scoffed.

“So, what is it, then?”

“You really wanna go down that rabbit hole?” she shook her pretty head. “Okay. One of my clients told me about him after a few drinks. She said he knew what he was doing, he was willing to do it, and that’s it. I seduced him, or he seduced me. It doesn’t matter now. I just wanted to fuck, Mark, and he was kind enough to ask politely.”

Mark pushed the plate and took a sip of his coffee.

“I see you enjoyed it, too” she added. “I can’t believe you got hard only after seeing me with someone else.”

She lit a cigarette nervously and bit her lower lip.

“Do you love me?” he asked quietly.

Ella stared at him intensely but said nothing. Their eye contact resumed for a very long time. Mark looked down.

“I wanna see you again,” he said. “But not that guy. I want you to break up with him.”

Ella laughed.

“Break up? What are you talking about?” she chuckled. “And what do you mean you wanna see me again?”

“I wanna see you fuck someone else,” Mark said flatly. “I think this could help our…issues.”

“You’ve lost your damn mind,” she nodded with brows raised high.

“Listen, you have needs, I get it,” Mark raised his voice. “I get that. Watching you…well, you saw the effect it had on me last night. So, when you sleep with someone, I wanna be there. I don’t want you to have sex in dirty motels. Bring your lovers here, and I’ll watch.”

“And you won’t even bother to ask me if I’m okay with my husband watching me fuck someone else?” she yelled. “Or a guy who’s supposed to be my husband.”

“Well, are you okay with that?”

She shook her head and got up, putting out her cigarette on the plate angrily.

“Fuck you,” she said.

“Then we’ll have to get divorced,” Mark stated. “I don’t see any other way.”

Ella stormed out of the room and the house. She slammed every door on her way out, including the door of her car.
